A portrait for a magazine has a different job from a headshot for LinkedIn. It has to hold a full page, sit next to a long interview and still look like the person a reader would want to meet. That was the brief when a young Dubai entrepreneur, well known in the city's business scene, came to our studio for the photographs that will accompany his feature in a financial magazine. We kept everything deliberately simple: a dark grey backdrop, one black chair, soft directional light and nothing else in the frame, so the attention stays on his expression and posture. He brought three outfits, a black knit, a navy cardigan over a white t-shirt and a beige sweater, and we shot each one standing and seated, with arms crossed, hands together, leaning forward and relaxed on the chair, giving the magazine's art director a choice of moods from serious to approachable on every page. All frames are vertical and shot at high resolution so they can run full page in print and still crop cleanly to a square or a wide header online.
